Russia, France and Germany contributed much to the perfection of the Poodle. It was a German word "pudel" (to splash in water) that gave the name to the breed. France considered the Poodle to be the national dog of the country. Even now many people believe that France is a true motherland of the breed. In America its popularity underwent a decrease at the beginning of the 20th century. However, at present it is restored to the joy of all people who adore Poodles.

If you mention "poodle" to anyone who has never owned one, in all probability, a person will imagine a picture of a white Poodle performing tricks in a circus. Few are aware that the Poodle was originally bred to be a water dog. It used to retrieve game fowl shot down by the Poodle's owner. It is believed that the Poodle is related to the famous Portuguese water dog. The name "Poodle" is a derivative from the old German "pudeln," which can be translated as "to splash in water." Poodles make the best companions anyone can dream about.
